Petr Klíma career

From 1985 to 1989, Klma spent four complete seasons with the Wings before being dealt to the Oilers (together with Joe Murphy, Adam Graves, and Jeff Sharples) in exchange for Jimmy Carson, Kevin McClelland, and a fifth-round pick in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft.

Despite not playing at all in the third period or the first two overtimes of Game 1 of the 1990 Finals against Andy Moog of the Boston Bruins, Klima scored the game-winning goal in the longest Stanley Cup Finals game in history.

He was an Oilers player from 1980 until 1993, and he won the Stanley Cup in 1990. The Lightning acquired Klima in 1993 in exchange for potential future benefits.

Until 1996, Klma spent three seasons with the Lightning. He played with the Lumberjacks, Kings, Penguins, and Oilers during the 1996–97 campaign before being released in 1997.

In 1997–1998 he participated in the DEL, and in 1998 he tried to make a comeback with the Red Wings.

He left the NHL in 1999, played two seasons in the Czech league in 2001–2003, and then announced his permanent retirement in 2003. During those two years, he captained and played for Litvinov.

Klma responded with the number 85 in honor of the year of his defection and his debut season in the NHL when asked which jersey number he wanted to don.

Petr Klma, albeit one of Detroit’s more prominent stars in the late 1980s, was also a headache for the Red Wings’ administration.

On September 23, 1988, during training camp, Detroit suspended Bob Probert and Klma indefinitely for violating team rules, which brought the situation to a head. The Wings promised to move Klma at the time of the ban, but this never materialized.

The team added that until Klma had his drinking under control, it would not accept him back. Klma missed the start of the 1988–1989 campaign as a result. On October 13, 1988, he was reinstated, and on October 16, 1988, he was sent to Adirondack (AHL).

On November 6, 1988, when Detroit played Edmonton, he finally made his 1988–89 NHL debut and recorded an assist.

On November 5, 1988, during his first session with the team, Klma sincerely apologized to his Wings teammates for his prior behavior, which was largely alcohol-related.

Klma shared a room with Probert throughout his time away, who was likewise attempting to control his drinking and drug use.

Klma was able to maintain her sobriety, but Probert’s substance misuse and related problems would last for years.
